Tax & Accounting for Newport Businesses

Newport is south Wales's third city and one of the UK's most strategically-located commercial centres. NP18 to NP20 cover Newport itself plus Caerleon, Llanwern and parts of Rogerstone, anchored by the substantial Friars Walk Shopping Centre and Newport city centre, the long-running steelworks and manufacturing heritage at Llanwern that has evolved alongside modern light manufacturing, the busy M4 corridor making Newport a logistics and distribution hub, the Celtic Manor Resort driving event-driven hospitality (including the 2014 NATO summit and 2010 Ryder Cup heritage), and a wider NP community providing CIS subcontractors and trades businesses across south Wales and the Severn corridor.

That mix creates a particular accounting profile. Logistics and distribution operators along the M4 need proper VAT treatment plus capital allowances on fleet vehicles and warehousing equipment. Light manufacturing and steel-related businesses need proper handling of capital allowances and stock. CIS subcontractors need clean monthly returns and same-day refund processing. Celtic Manor and event-driven hospitality need cash flow planning around the events calendar. Welsh-resident clients have Welsh Rates of Income Tax to consider, and property transactions use Land Transaction Tax. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Newport clients online with fixed monthly fees.

Client Story

How we sorted a Newport logistics operator

Client S runs a small logistics operation through his own Limited Company near the M4, providing freight and distribution services with a fleet of vans serving customers across south Wales and into the west of England. When he came to us he was VAT-registered but on the wrong scheme for his cash cycle, had four drivers paid as 'self-employed' when HMRC would almost certainly consider them employees, and had never had a serious conversation about capital allowances on his fleet.

We moved him to Cash Accounting for VAT to match his payment terms, restructured his drivers into proper PAYE employment with all the protections that brings (and the Employment Allowance offsetting most of the additional employer's NI), claimed back-year capital allowances on the fleet vans, and put proper management accounts in place so he could see profitability per route.

Year one outcome: avoided what could have been a costly HMRC employment status determination, around £6,400 in legitimate tax savings, and a business that's now built to grow rather than to keep its head down.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I pay drivers cash as 'self-employed' in my Newport logistics business. Is that ok?
Often not. HMRC tests employment status by looking at the actual working relationship, not what the contract says. If you control when and how they work, they can't substitute, and they're paid for time rather than for an output, they're likely employees in HMRC's eyes. Worker status determinations can be expensive when they go against you.
I run a Newport logistics business with a fleet of vans. What capital allowances apply?
Vans qualify for the Annual Investment Allowance giving 100 per cent relief on the first £1 million of purchases per year. Cars are different and qualify for writing-down allowances at different rates depending on CO2 emissions. Electric vans currently qualify for Full Expensing.
I'm a Newport CIS subcontractor. How quickly can you get my refund?
We typically file CIS refund claims within 7-10 days of the 6 April tax year end, with HMRC usually processing payment within 2-4 weeks after that. We provide a receipt-capture app.
My Newport manufacturing business has bought new equipment. What capital allowances?
The Annual Investment Allowance gives 100 per cent relief on the first £1 million per year. Full Expensing (permanent from 2024) gives 100 per cent on new plant with no AIA limit.
I'm Welsh-resident running my Newport business. How does that affect my tax?
Welsh residents pay Welsh Rates of Income Tax (WRIT) on non-savings, non-dividend income. Currently the rates match the rest-of-UK rates. National Insurance, Corporation Tax, and dividend tax rates are UK-wide. The practical effect on most clients is small at present.
My Newport Ltd company sells goods to customers in the EU. What VAT applies?
Export sales of goods to outside the UK are zero-rated for VAT (you still reclaim input VAT on related costs). For consumer (B2C) sales to the EU, the OSS scheme handles EU VAT through a single UK registration. For business (B2B) sales, the destination VAT becomes the customer's responsibility under reverse charge.
My Newport warehouse business takes on its first employee. What's involved?
PAYE registration with HMRC, setting up a workplace pension scheme for auto-enrolment, employer's liability insurance, a properly-drafted contract, and the ongoing monthly payroll. We handle all of this on a fixed monthly fee.
