Tax & Accounting for Aberdeen West End Businesses

Aberdeen West End has one of Scotland's most settled and affluent business communities. AB15 covers the West End itself plus Mannofield, Cults and parts of Hazlehead, anchored by the long parade of independent restaurants, bars and retailers along Holburn Street, Union Grove and the West End's commercial streets, the established affluent residential community drawn by the city's professional and executive base, the substantial Robert Gordon's College and other private school presence supporting an international family community, the substantial Anderson Drive commercial corridor, the proximity to Hazlehead Park supporting recreation, and a wider AB15 community combining deep affluence (Aberdeen West End is consistently among Scotland's most affluent residential areas) with strong year-round professional residents working in oil and gas, energy transition and corporate services.

That settled affluence creates a particular accounting profile. Senior oil and gas executives and contractors working through Limited Companies need IR35-aware structures and proper handling of multi-currency invoicing. Independent restaurants and bars along the West End streets need solid VAT treatment and proper Tronc handling. International family households (common in Aberdeen given the global oil and gas community) need careful handling of the new Foreign Income and Gains rules from April 2025. Scottish income tax rates apply, and property transactions use LBTT. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Aberdeen West End clients online with fixed monthly fees.

Client Story

How we sorted an Aberdeen West End international family

Client N is an Aberdeen West End-based oil and gas executive with an internationally-mobile career and a family with overseas connections (including a partner who had been working in Houston for several years). When he came to us in mid-2025 the position was complicated: he had spent significant time as a non-dom on the remittance basis under the old rules, the new Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) regime was now in force from April 2025, he had a UK Limited Company alongside USD oil and gas consulting income and overseas family income sources, and his previous accountant had not really engaged with the transition.

We modelled his position under both the old transitional rules and the new four-year FIG regime, advised on which foreign income to remit (and when) to take advantage of the transitional Temporary Repatriation Facility, restructured his UK Ltd company so it interacted cleanly with his overseas position and his Scottish income tax position, and worked through his Self-Assessment with the new rules properly applied.

Year one outcome: a coherent tax position that uses the transitional rules sensibly without leaving anything on the table, a UK structure that won't blow up in subsequent years as the new regime beds in, and Client N now genuinely understands the rules.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I used to claim non-dom status. How do the new Foreign Income and Gains rules from April 2025 affect me?
Substantially. The non-dom remittance basis was abolished from April 2025 and replaced with a four-year Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) regime for new arrivals to the UK. Existing long-term residents have transitional rules including a Temporary Repatriation Facility for previously-untaxed overseas income and gains. The position is detailed and the right approach depends on your specific circumstances.
I'm Scottish-resident in Aberdeen West End. How do the Scottish tax rates affect me?
Scottish residents pay Scottish income tax rates on non-savings, non-dividend income. The Scottish bands include 19, 20, 21, 42, 45 and 48 per cent rates. National Insurance, Corporation Tax, dividend tax and savings tax remain UK-wide. The practical effect on higher earners is materially different from rest-of-UK.
I'm a high-earning Aberdeen West End professional. What about the 60 per cent tax trap?
Between £100,000 and £125,140 of adjusted net income, the personal allowance tapers away. In Scotland the marginal rate in that band is even higher than rest-of-UK because the higher Scottish rates compound. Pension contributions, Gift Aid donations and salary sacrifice all reduce adjusted net income.
My AB15 Ltd company has substantial reserves. What are my options?
Pension contributions through the company are usually the most tax-efficient. A Members' Voluntary Liquidation at the eventual end of contracting can be very tax-efficient with Business Asset Disposal Relief reducing CGT to 10 per cent on the first £1 million (CGT remains UK-wide).
I'm an Aberdeen West End landlord with rental properties. Should I incorporate?
For higher-rate landlords with three or more properties, incorporation often makes long-term sense due to full mortgage interest deduction inside a Ltd company. The transfer triggers CGT and LBTT in Scotland (rather than SDLT). We'll model the breakeven.
My Holburn Street restaurant has Tronc tips. How should I handle them?
A properly-run Tronc scheme lets tips be paid free of National Insurance for both employer and staff (still subject to PAYE), saving roughly 15 per cent of the tip value. The scheme needs to be genuinely independent of the employer and properly documented.
My AB15 family business has been trading 25 years. How do I plan succession?
Succession needs to start 5-10 years before the actual handover. Trading businesses qualify for 100 per cent Business Property Relief from IHT if conditions are met. Gifting shares during your lifetime uses the seven-year rule and freezes the value at gift date. IHT rules are UK-wide regardless of Scottish residence.
