Tax & Accounting for Exeter Businesses

Exeter has one of the south-west's most distinctive cathedral-city and university-cluster business communities. EX1 to EX4 cover the central commercial district, the substantial Princesshay Shopping Centre and Guildhall Shopping Centre, the long-running independent retailers along Gandy Street and Fore Street, the substantial year-round tourism around Exeter Cathedral and the Quayside, the major University of Exeter presence at Streatham Campus driving an academic and student community, the substantial Met Office head office (one of the world's leading climate and weather research centres) supporting a specialist tech and research community, the busy M5 corridor making Exeter a logistics and distribution location, the substantial Exeter Airport supporting aviation-adjacent businesses, and a wider EX community shaped by Exeter's status as the south-west's principal regional capital.

That mix gives Exeter a particular accounting profile. University of Exeter researchers and Met Office contractors working through Limited Companies need IR35-aware structures. Princesshay and Guildhall concession holders need specific landlord turnover reporting. M5-corridor logistics operators need proper VAT treatment plus capital allowances on fleet vehicles. Cathedral-area hospitality needs solid VAT treatment and seasonal cash flow planning. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Exeter clients online with fixed monthly fees.

Client Story

How we sorted an Exeter Met Office contractor

Client G is a senior climate science consultant based in Exeter, working through her own Limited Company on long-term engagements with the Met Office and a UK university client. When she came to us her IR35 position had not been reviewed since the off-payroll rules changed, her bookkeeping was on spreadsheets, her pension contributions through the company were minimal despite substantial scope, and she had never had a proper conversation about whether her structure suited her income level.

We audited each engagement for IR35 status. The Met Office engagement had been determined inside IR35 (a defensible determination), but the university research engagement was genuinely outside following a careful review of the SDS. We restructured the Limited Company to handle the two income streams cleanly, migrated her onto Xero, set up substantial employer pension contributions through the company on the outside-IR35 income using carry-forward from the previous three tax years, and addressed the historic position with HMRC.

Year one outcome: a defensible HMRC position on both engagements, annual tax saving of around £6,200 from cleaner structuring, a one-off catch-up pension contribution capturing Corporation Tax relief at 25 per cent, and Client G now genuinely understands her IR35 position.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I contract to the Met Office or another major Exeter public sector client. How does IR35 work?
Medium and large clients (which the Met Office certainly is, as is the University of Exeter) make the IR35 determination through a formal Status Determination Statement. Public sector clients have been operating the off-payroll rules since 2017. If determined inside IR35, your contract income has to be paid through PAYE. We'll review your specific SDS.
I'm a University of Exeter researcher with consulting income. How do I declare it?
Your university income is taxed through PAYE and appears on your P60. Your consulting income goes on the self-employed pages of Self-Assessment. The £1,000 trading allowance covers the first £1,000 of consulting income tax-free.
My Princesshay or Guildhall concession requires monthly turnover reporting. How do you handle it?
Cleanly. We set up your bookkeeping with the landlord's required categorisation so the monthly report falls out of your accounting software, and we make sure it ties back to your VAT return and year-end accounts.
I run an M5-corridor logistics business with a fleet of vans. What capital allowances apply?
Vans qualify for the Annual Investment Allowance giving 100 per cent relief on the first £1 million per year. Cars qualify for writing-down allowances at different rates depending on CO2 emissions. Electric vans currently qualify for Full Expensing.
My Cathedral-area hospitality business is busy in summer. How do I plan?
Rolling 13-week cash flow forecasts that account for the seasonal pattern. Most of our Exeter hospitality clients work to a clear summer-versus-winter rhythm, with summer trade funding the quieter winter weeks.
My Gandy Street independent retailer has been steady. Any tax planning?
Capital allowances on shop fittings and equipment, sensible VAT scheme selection, ensuring stock is valued correctly at year end, capturing all legitimate business expenses, and reviewing whether the structure suits your income level.
I'm an Exeter Airport-adjacent business. Anything specific for VAT?
Several specific reliefs can apply to genuine airport operations: services supplied to international airlines can be zero-rated, certain airside services have particular treatment, and import VAT on goods passing through can be handled via Postponed VAT Accounting.
