Tax & Accounting for Truro Businesses

Truro is Cornwall's county town and only city. TR1 covers Truro itself plus Kenwyn, Highertown and parts of Threemilestone, anchored by the substantial year-round tourism around Truro Cathedral, the long parade of independent retailers along Lemon Street, Boscawen Street and King Street, the substantial Lemon Quay open-air retail area and the Pannier Market, the substantial Cornwall Council civic presence at New County Hall driving a major public sector and professional services economy, the long-running Royal Cornwall Hospital presence supporting a substantial NHS and medical professional community, the substantial Cornwall holiday-let economy across the county that many Truro-based landlords participate in, and a wider TR1 community combining Cornish cultural heritage with strong year-round professional residents.

That mix creates a particular accounting profile. Cornwall holiday let owners need careful handling of the Furnished Holiday Letting regime (which is changing in the next few years and matters enormously to Cornwall's holiday economy). Tourism-dependent businesses need cash flow forecasting around the heavy seasonal pattern. Cornwall Council and NHS contractors working through Limited Companies need IR35-aware structures (public sector clients have been operating the off-payroll rules since 2017). Independent retailers along Lemon Street need solid bookkeeping. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Truro clients online with fixed monthly fees.

Client Story

How we sorted a Truro Cornwall holiday let owner

Client H owns six holiday let properties across Cornwall (some near Truro, some on the north coast at Padstow, some on the south coast at Falmouth), managed from his base in Truro. When he came to us he had been letting the properties for several years, declaring the income as ordinary property income on his Self-Assessment, and was getting a significant chunk taxed at his higher marginal rate as a result.

We assessed whether the properties qualified as Furnished Holiday Lettings (FHL) under the qualifying conditions. With careful documentation of the availability days and actual letting days, all six properties met the FHL conditions. We restructured the tax treatment to use FHL rules, which gave access to capital allowances on furniture and equipment, potential Business Asset Disposal Relief on eventual sale, and pension contribution eligibility from the income. We also worked through the proposed FHL regime changes due in the next few years so the position is set up for the transition.

Year one outcome: annual tax saving of around £8,200 from the FHL treatment plus capital allowances catch-up, and a portfolio position that's now actively planned for the upcoming FHL regime changes rather than something that might come as a surprise.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I let holiday properties in Cornwall. Is the income property income or trading?
Potentially better than ordinary property income. If the property qualifies as a Furnished Holiday Letting (under strict availability and actual letting tests), you get access to capital allowances on furniture, potentially Business Asset Disposal Relief on sale, and pension contribution eligibility. The FHL regime is changing in the next few years and this matters enormously to Cornwall holiday let portfolios.
My Cornwall tourism-dependent business is busy summer and quiet winter. How do I plan?
Rolling 13-week cash flow forecasts that account for the seasonal pattern. Most of our Cornwall hospitality and tourism clients work to a clear summer-versus-winter rhythm, with summer trade funding the quieter winter weeks. The Cornwall season runs roughly Easter to October half-term, with a smaller surge in December for short breaks.
I contract to Cornwall Council or the NHS in Truro. How does IR35 work?
Public sector clients (including Cornwall Council and the NHS) have been operating the off-payroll rules since 2017. They make the IR35 determination through a formal Status Determination Statement. If determined inside IR35, your contract income has to be paid through PAYE with employer NI. We'll review your specific SDS.
My Truro restaurant has Tronc tips. How should I handle them?
A properly-run Tronc scheme lets tips be paid free of National Insurance for both employer and staff (still subject to PAYE), saving roughly 15 per cent of the tip value. The scheme needs to be genuinely independent of the employer and properly documented.
My Lemon Quay or Pannier Market retail business has cash takings. What records do I need?
Daily Z-reads from the till, every supplier invoice digitised, separate business banking, proper monthly reconciliation. Cash-heavy businesses get more HMRC attention but rigorous record-keeping makes that uneventful.
Can you help me move from sole trader to Limited Company in Truro?
Yes. For most consistent £40k-plus profit trades and small businesses, incorporating saves meaningful tax through the salary/dividend split. We handle company formation, asset transfers, new HMRC registrations and the first year's books.
I trade at the Pannier Market in Truro. What do I need to register for?
Self-Assessment once gross sales pass £1,000 a year (the trading allowance). VAT if sales pass £85,000 in any rolling 12-month period. We handle the registrations and ongoing filing for several Cornwall market traders.
