Accountant for Trades & Construction, UK

You Run the Job. We Will Run the Tax.

Most tradesmen on CIS have tax deducted at 20% from every payment before it reaches them, and after a year of van costs, fuel, tools, materials, insurance and protective clothing, that almost always means HMRC owes you money back. The trouble is the refund only comes if your return is filed correctly with every allowable expense captured, and a rushed self-filed return usually leaves hundreds of pounds sitting with HMRC.

Your Tax Help Accountants works with plumbers, electricians, builders, plasterers, painters, roofers, scaffolders and every other trade across the UK, whether you are a CIS subcontractor, a sole trader or a limited company. We reclaim your overpaid CIS tax, claim your van and mileage, tools, materials, workwear, insurance and the business use of your phone, and file an accurate Self Assessment or company return. One fixed fee, one accountant who understands the trade, and your refund chased and paid.

If you are on CIS and have only claimed your obvious costs, you are almost certainly due more back, van, fuel, tools, materials, workwear, insurance, phone and mileage at 45p (55p for 2026/27) a mile all count. A quick review captures them and gets your refund up to what it should be.

On CIS and Never Claimed Your Refund?

If you are a CIS subcontractor and you have either never filed or filed a bare return, there is a strong chance HMRC is holding hundreds or even thousands of pounds of your money. CIS refunds can usually be claimed for several past years, not just the last one. We review your CIS deductions and real costs, file or amend the returns, and chase your refund through to your bank account.

Recent Client Outcome

How we reclaimed an overpaid CIS subcontractor over ยฃ2,000

A self-employed groundworker on CIS came to us having filed his own returns for two years. He declared his income and his CIS deductions but claimed almost nothing in expenses, because he assumed his van and tools were just the cost of doing business. His refunds were small and he felt the tax never quite added up.

We went through a full year of his real costs: his van running costs and business mileage between sites, fuel, his tools and power equipment, materials he had paid for himself, his workwear and safety boots, public liability insurance and the business use of his phone. We also corrected the prior year that was still inside the amendment window.

Once his genuine expenses were set against his income and his CIS deductions, his refund came back over ยฃ2,000 larger than he had been getting. He now sends us his figures once a year for a fixed fee, and his refund lands without him chasing HMRC.

Trade & CIS Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I owed a CIS tax refund?
Very likely, if you are a CIS subcontractor. Contractors deduct 20% from your pay before you receive it, but that is taken off your gross earnings before any expenses. Once we claim your van, fuel, tools, materials, workwear, insurance and mileage, your real tax bill is usually much lower than what was deducted, and the difference comes back to you. Most subcontractors we take on are due a refund, and we can often reclaim for previous years too.
What expenses can a tradesman claim?
A great deal: van running costs or mileage at 45p (55p for 2026/27) a mile, fuel, tools and equipment, materials you buy yourself, workwear and PPE, safety boots, public liability and tool insurance, ladders and access equipment, the business use of your phone, accountancy fees and training that maintains your skills. Many trades under-claim simply because receipts go missing, which is exactly where we help you keep more.
Should I be a sole trader or a limited company?
It depends on your profit, your contracts and whether you want CIS gross status. Sole trader is simple and fine for many subcontractors. Once profits grow, a limited company can be more tax-efficient and lets you apply for gross payment status so tax is no longer deducted at source. We run the numbers for your situation and set you up whichever way leaves you better off, then handle the paperwork.
What is the VAT Domestic Reverse Charge?
It is a VAT rule specific to construction. For most CIS-covered work between VAT-registered businesses, the customer accounts for the VAT rather than you charging it on your invoice. It changes how you invoice and how your VAT returns work, and getting it wrong is a common cause of errors. We handle your VAT registration, your invoicing and your returns so the reverse charge is applied correctly.
How much does an accountant for tradesmen cost?
A fixed fee, quoted up front after a free fifteen-minute call, with no surprise bills. For CIS subcontractors the fee is very often covered several times over by the larger refund we secure. For limited company trades we offer fixed monthly packages covering bookkeeping, VAT, CIS returns, payroll and year-end accounts. Either way you get a predictable fee and an accountant who knows construction.
