Filed your own returns and never quite trusted the numbers? Most people who come to us are owed money back, from expenses they never claimed, payments on account that were too high, or CIS tax over-deducted. We review the last four years and reclaim it, all for a fixed fee.
Self-Assessment Tax Refund, UK
Self-Assessment refunds usually come from one of three places. The most common is expenses you were entitled to claim but did not, because you did not know they counted or kept poor records. The second is payments on account: if your income fell, the instalments HMRC asked for in advance may be far more than your actual bill, leaving you in credit. The third is CIS, where subcontractors have 20% deducted at source that frequently exceeds what they actually owe once expenses are claimed. Most people filing their own returns leave at least one of these on the table.
Your Tax Help Accountants reviews your last four years of Self Assessment as a standard part of taking you on. We find the expenses that were missed, correct returns still inside the amendment window, make an overpayment relief claim for older years where one applies, and recover over-deducted CIS tax. The refund lands in your bank account, and going forward your returns are filed correctly so you stop overpaying. One fixed fee, and it is very often a fraction of what we recover.
You can amend a return up to twelve months after the filing deadline, and claim overpayment relief for up to four tax years beyond that. If you have been filing your own returns, there is a strong chance a review finds money owed back to you.
What We Handle
We review your last four years of returns line by line and identify expenses, reliefs and deductions that were missed or under-claimed.
Mileage, working from home, tools, training, subscriptions, phone and the dozens of allowable costs most self-filers never claim, captured and reclaimed.
If your income fell, your advance payments may be too high. We reduce them and reclaim the credit sitting with HMRC.
Subcontractors lose 20% at source, usually more than they owe. We claim the difference back, often several years at once.
Returns inside the twelve-month window are amended; older years are recovered through an overpayment relief claim where one applies.
Once your refund is recovered, we file your future returns correctly so you only ever pay the tax you actually owe.
Most people have no idea, because the only way to know is to review the returns properly. A quick look at your last couple of years usually tells us within minutes whether there is money to reclaim. There is no cost to find out, and if there is nothing there, we will tell you honestly. If there is, we recover it for a fixed fee that comes out of the refund.
Recent Client Outcome
A self-employed designer had filed her own returns for four years through the HMRC portal. She declared her income and a few obvious costs but had never claimed her home office, her software subscriptions, her equipment, her mileage to client meetings or the business proportion of her phone and broadband.
We reviewed all four years. The two most recent were still inside the amendment window, so we corrected them directly. For the two older years we made an overpayment relief claim covering the under-claimed expenses. We rebuilt each year's position from her records and submitted the corrections with a clear breakdown HMRC could follow.
The combined refund came back at over ยฃ3,000. She moved onto our fixed-fee service, and her returns are now filed correctly each year so the over-payment does not happen again.
