Tax & Accounting for Newbury Businesses

Newbury has one of the Thames Valley's most distinctive market-town-and-corporate business communities. RG14 covers Newbury itself plus Greenham, Speen and parts of Thatcham, anchored by the long-running Newbury Market (held in the town centre since the 12th century), the substantial Parkway Shopping Centre, the substantial Newbury Racecourse driving major event-day trade (Hennessy Gold Cup, Lockinge Day, plus regular flat and jump fixtures), the substantial Vodafone UK head office at Newbury supporting a major regional tech and contractor economy, the substantial Greenham Business Park supporting tech and professional services tenants, the busy M4 corridor making Newbury a London-commuter base, and a wider RG14 community combining strong corporate and event-driven trade with year-round professional residents.

That mix gives Newbury a particular accounting profile. Vodafone and other corporate contractors working through Limited Companies need IR35-aware structures (Vodafone is one of the major Thames Valley employers that determines IR35 status formally). Newbury Racecourse event-day concession holders need event-driven cash flow planning. Parkway concession holders need specific landlord turnover reporting. Independent retailers and market traders need solid bookkeeping. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Newbury clients online with fixed monthly fees.

💡 As an HMRC-registered agent we deal directly with HMRC on your behalf, so you never have to spend hours on hold or navigate their website yourself.

Client Story

How we restructured a Newbury Vodafone contractor

Client S is a tech consultant based in Newbury, working through his own Limited Company on long-term engagements with Vodafone UK and a London-based fintech client. When he came to us his IR35 position had not been reviewed since the off-payroll rules changed, his Vodafone engagement had been quietly determined inside IR35 some time before but his previous accountant had not properly adjusted the company's operation, and several of his expense claims were no longer appropriate.

We audited each engagement. Vodafone had moved him inside IR35 (a defensible determination based on the working pattern), but the London fintech engagement was genuinely outside following a careful review of the SDS. We restructured the Limited Company to handle the two income streams cleanly, addressed the historic position with HMRC properly before they noticed, set up substantial employer pension contributions through the company on the outside-IR35 income, and built a defensible documentation trail for both engagements.

Year one outcome: a defensible HMRC position that won't blow up if either client is investigated, annual tax saving of around £6,400 from cleaner structuring, and Client S now genuinely understands his IR35 position engagement by engagement.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I contract to Vodafone UK at Newbury. How does IR35 work?
Vodafone is a medium-or-large client and makes the IR35 determination through a formal Status Determination Statement. If determined inside IR35, your contract income has to be paid through PAYE with employer NI. If outside, you can still optimise normally. We'll review your specific SDS.
I run a Newbury Racecourse event-day concession. How do I plan for the lumpy income?
Rolling cash flow forecasts that account for the racing calendar (Hennessy Gold Cup, Lockinge Day, regular flat fixtures, jump fixtures), plus separate business savings accounts that properly provision for quarterly VAT and annual Self-Assessment payments. Event-driven trade creates predictable revenue spikes.
My Parkway Shopping Centre concession requires monthly turnover reporting. How do you handle it?
Cleanly. We set up your bookkeeping with the landlord's required categorisation so the monthly report falls out of your accounting software, and we make sure it ties back to your VAT return and year-end accounts.
I trade at Newbury Market. What do I need to register for?
Self-Assessment once gross sales pass £1,000 a year (the trading allowance). VAT if sales pass £85,000 in any rolling 12-month period. We handle the registrations and ongoing filing for several Thames Valley market traders.
I run a Greenham Business Park tech business. Anything specific?
Tech businesses typically benefit from EIS/SEIS structuring for fundraising, EMI share option schemes for key hires, and R&D tax credits where genuine. We handle all three regularly for Thames Valley clients.
My Newbury Ltd company has substantial reserves. What are my options?
Pension contributions through the company are usually the most tax-efficient. A Members' Voluntary Liquidation at the eventual end of contracting can be very tax-efficient with Business Asset Disposal Relief reducing CGT to 10 per cent on the first £1 million.
My RG14 family business has been trading 25 years. How do I plan succession?
Succession needs to start 5-10 years before the actual handover. Trading businesses qualify for 100 per cent Business Property Relief from IHT if conditions are met. Gifting shares during your lifetime uses the seven-year rule.
How do I get started?
