Tax & Accounting for Peterborough Businesses

Peterborough has one of the East of England's most strategically-located business communities. PE1 to PE4 cover Peterborough city centre plus Bretton, Werrington and parts of Stanground, anchored by the substantial Queensgate Shopping Centre and Peterborough city centre, the long-running cathedral heritage supporting some tourism trade, the busy A1 corridor making Peterborough a logistics and distribution hub, the substantial financial services presence (TUI UK head office, Thomas Cook's former HQ legacy, insurance and financial sector employers), the substantial light manufacturing across the city's industrial estates, and a wider PE community providing CIS subcontractors and trades businesses across Cambridgeshire and into Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire.

That mix creates a particular accounting profile. Logistics and distribution operators along the A1 corridor need proper VAT treatment plus capital allowances on fleet vehicles and warehousing equipment. Financial services contractors working through Limited Companies need IR35-aware structures. Light manufacturing on the industrial estates needs proper VAT treatment plus capital allowances. CIS subcontractors need clean monthly returns and same-day refund processing. Queensgate concession holders need specific landlord turnover reporting. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Peterborough clients online with fixed monthly fees.

Client Story

How we sorted a Peterborough logistics operator

Client D runs a small logistics operation through his own Limited Company near the A1, providing freight and distribution services with a fleet of vans serving customers across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and into Yorkshire. When he came to us he was VAT-registered but on the wrong scheme for his cash cycle, had three drivers paid as 'self-employed' when HMRC would almost certainly consider them employees, and had never had a serious conversation about capital allowances on his fleet.

We moved him to Cash Accounting for VAT to match his payment terms, restructured his drivers into proper PAYE employment with all the protections that brings (and the Employment Allowance offsetting most of the additional employer's NI), claimed back-year capital allowances on the fleet vans, and put proper management accounts in place so he could see profitability per route.

Year one outcome: avoided what could have been a costly HMRC employment status determination, around £5,600 in legitimate tax savings, and a business that's now built to grow rather than to keep its head down.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I pay drivers cash as 'self-employed' in my Peterborough logistics business. Is that ok?
Often not. HMRC tests employment status by looking at the actual working relationship, not what the contract says. If you control when and how they work, they can't substitute, and they're paid for time rather than for an output, they're likely employees in HMRC's eyes. Worker status determinations can be expensive when they go against you.
I run a Peterborough logistics business with a fleet of vans. What capital allowances apply?
Vans qualify for the Annual Investment Allowance giving 100 per cent relief on the first £1 million of purchases per year. Cars are different and qualify for writing-down allowances at different rates depending on CO2 emissions. Electric vans currently qualify for Full Expensing.
I'm a Peterborough CIS subcontractor. How quickly can you get my refund?
We typically file CIS refund claims within 7-10 days of the 6 April tax year end, with HMRC usually processing payment within 2-4 weeks after that. We provide a receipt-capture app.
I'm a Peterborough financial services contractor. Should I review my IR35?
Yes, especially if you haven't reviewed since the off-payroll rules changed in 2021. For medium and large clients (which most Peterborough financial services employers are), the client makes the determination. We review the SDS and your working arrangements.
My Peterborough manufacturing business has bought new equipment. What capital allowances?
The Annual Investment Allowance gives 100 per cent relief on the first £1 million per year. Full Expensing (permanent from 2024) gives 100 per cent on new plant with no AIA limit. We audit your last three years of capital spend.
My Queensgate concession requires monthly turnover reporting. How do you handle it?
Cleanly. We set up your bookkeeping with the landlord's required categorisation so the monthly report falls out of your accounting software, and we make sure it ties back to your VAT return and year-end accounts.
My Peterborough Ltd company sells goods to customers in the EU. What VAT applies?
Export sales of goods to outside the UK are zero-rated for VAT (you still reclaim input VAT on related costs). For consumer (B2C) sales to the EU, the OSS scheme handles EU VAT through a single UK registration. For business (B2B) sales, the destination VAT becomes the customer's responsibility under reverse charge.
