Self-Assessment Made Simple for Slough Taxpayers

Slough is one of the most economically active self-assessment markets in the broader West London-Berkshire commuter corridor, with the very substantial Slough Trading Estate (one of the largest single-ownership business parks in Europe, home to Mars, McAfee, Reckitt and the wider tech and consumer-goods cluster), the substantial Heathrow Airport-adjacent freight, logistics and travel-services workforce, the very substantial South Asian small-business community across SL1 and SL2, high-earning employees commuting via the Elizabeth line into central London (Slough is around 20 minutes to Paddington), and a substantial population of self-employed tradespeople, drivers, freight forwarders and small-business owners. Many Slough taxpayers fall into the self-assessment net for several reasons at once: self-employed business or trade income, PAYE plus side-business income, rental income on Elizabeth-line-uplifted Slough properties, and the high-income child-benefit charge.

Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, handles complete self-assessment for Slough taxpayers across SL1 and SL2. SA100 tax returns, payments on account, allowable expense reviews, MTD readiness and HMRC correspondence, all at a fixed monthly fee with same-day filing available when the 31 January deadline is closing in.

💡 As an HMRC-registered agent, we deal with HMRC directly on your behalf. Authorisation in place, returns filed, refunds chased, compliance letters handled. You only ever hear from us, never from HMRC.

Real Client Story

How we cleared the penalty backlog for a Slough self-employed freight forwarder

Client E is a self-employed freight forwarder based in Slough, operating out of the Heathrow air-cargo corridor with around £72,000 of annual income from import-export documentation, customs clearance and logistics services to small UK importers and South Asian trading houses. When they came to us he was behind on his self-assessment for the previous three tax years (he had registered for SA but then never actually filed), with HMRC penalty letters totalling around £4,500 of fixed and daily-rate penalties piling up, and the prospect of HMRC enforcement action including possible bailiff action becoming real.

We took the situation in hand within 72 hours of engagement. First, we obtained HMRC agent authorisation and called the dedicated agent line to put a 30-day enforcement hold on the account while we got him compliant. We then worked through his three years of bank statements, supplier invoices, mileage records and customer documentation, reconstructed the trading position for each year, and filed all three outstanding returns within four weeks. The actual underlying tax was much smaller than the penalties suggested (around £8,800 across all three years). We then submitted detailed reasonable-excuse appeals against the late-filing penalties citing specific personal circumstances (a family bereavement and a serious-illness diagnosis in years one and two respectively, both of which were properly evidenced). HMRC accepted the appeals in full and cancelled the late-filing penalties. For the underlying tax due, we negotiated a 24-month Time to Pay arrangement at affordable monthly instalments.

Outcome: all three years of outstanding returns filed, around £4,500 of late-filing penalties cancelled through successful reasonable-excuse appeals, an affordable Time to Pay arrangement in place for the underlying tax, complete HMRC correspondence now handled through us as authorised agents, and the client fully compliant and out of enforcement risk. Ongoing forward, the client moved to our fixed monthly fee arrangement which includes year-round bookkeeping support, ensuring the filing-on-time discipline is permanently embedded. Going forward, ongoing tax saving of around £3,200 a year through proper VAT scheme choice and expense capture that the previous DIY approach was missing.

Self-Assessment Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Self-Assessment Questions

What is the deadline for filing self-assessment if I am in Slough?
Paper returns must reach HMRC by 31 October following the end of the tax year. Online returns must be filed by midnight on 31 January. Tax owed must also be paid by 31 January. Late filing triggers an immediate £100 penalty even if no tax is due, with daily penalties from three months late and percentage-based penalties from six months and twelve months. We handle the full filing for you and confirm submission so you have a clear record.
What expenses can Slough self-employed workers claim against tax?
Allowable expenses include the business proportion of phone and broadband, working from home costs (either the flat-rate £6 per week or an actual-cost calculation), mileage at 45p (55p for 2026/27) per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, professional subscriptions, accountancy fees, training to maintain existing skills, equipment under the Annual Investment Allowance, marketing and advertising, business insurance, and reasonable travel and subsistence. Slough clients new to us frequently recover thousands in expenses missed by previous returns. We review every line.
How do payments on account work for Slough taxpayers?
If your tax bill (less PAYE) is more than £1,000 and less than 80 per cent of it was paid through PAYE, HMRC requires payments on account towards next year's tax. Each payment is 50 per cent of last year's bill, due 31 January and 31 July. If your income has fallen, you can claim a reduction. If you do not reduce and your actual bill is lower, you get a refund the following January with interest. We calibrate this properly so you are neither overpaying nor facing penalties.
I am behind on self-assessment in Slough. Can you sort it out?
Yes. We routinely handle late filings, multi-year arrears, missing UTRs, HMRC penalty letters and even formal enquiry letters. We register you (or re-register you) as needed, request a UTR, file all outstanding returns, agree a Time to Pay arrangement with HMRC if needed, and submit penalty appeals where there is a reasonable excuse. Most behind-the-line cases are fully back on track within four to six weeks of engaging us.
Can you help me claim a self-assessment tax refund in Slough?
Yes. Most refund situations come from one of three places: expenses not claimed in prior returns (we can amend up to four tax years back), overpaid payments on account where income has fallen, or CIS tax deductions that exceed final liability. Slough SL1-SL2 has a substantial self-employed freight-forwarding, logistics and Heathrow-corridor business community, HMRC refunds are typically paid within four to six weeks of an accepted return or amendment, directly to your nominated bank account.
I'm a freight forwarder. Is my service VAT-able and how do international transport rules work?
Freight forwarding services follow specific VAT place-of-supply rules. For most B2B international freight services, the place of supply is where the customer belongs (the 'general rule'), so freight services to overseas business customers are typically outside the scope of UK VAT. For domestic UK freight, standard 20 per cent VAT applies. Zero-rating applies to the international transport of goods themselves in certain circumstances, but freight-forwarding services (the documentation, customs clearance, agent work) are separate from the underlying transport. Customs clearance services for goods being imported into the UK are typically standard-rated. The VAT mapping for a freight-forwarder business is genuinely complex and we routinely set up correct VAT treatment for Slough and Heathrow-corridor freight-forwarding clients.
Can you take over from my current Slough accountant?
Usually 7-10 working days from signature of our engagement letter. Professional clearance, HMRC agent authorisation, records transfer, software migration. No break in your filing, no double charging. Most clients are fully across to us before the next deadline lands.
