Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm a King's College Hospital consultant with NHS and private income. Pension annual allowance?
The standard annual allowance is £60,000, tapering to £10,000 for adjusted income above £260,000. NHS pension growth counts towards it, and unused allowance from the previous three years can be carried forward — often missed. We review your NHS Pension Savings Statements, apply carry-forward and check whether Scheme Pays should settle any charge from the pension rather than your bank account.
I'm a Camberwell or Maudsley healthcare worker. What can I claim tax relief on?
NHS staff can claim tax relief on professional body fees (GMC, NMC, HCPC), professional indemnity insurance, a flat-rate uniform laundering allowance, specialist equipment where required, and CPD you pay yourself. If you also do agency or private work that's self-employment income needing self-assessment. We'll claim everything you're entitled to.
I'm a Camberwell artist or creative. How is my income taxed?
Self-employment income — sales, commissions, teaching, grants (usually taxable trading income). You register for self-assessment and claim expenses: studio rent, materials, equipment, travel, professional subscriptions, marketing, accountancy. We handle the return and advise on a Ltd company structure if your income justifies it.
I do private practice alongside my NHS job in Camberwell. How is it structured?
NHS income is employment (PAYE); private practice is usually self-employment, or a Ltd company if it's grown substantially. We combine the streams correctly, claim private-practice expenses, and handle the pension annual allowance position. For a significant private practice we advise on whether incorporating saves tax.
I'm a Camberwell landlord. What can I claim against rental income?
Repairs and maintenance, letting agent fees, landlord insurance, ground rent and service charges if leasehold, gas and electrical safety certification, mortgage interest (with the Section 24 restriction), and Replacement of Domestic Items relief on furniture. We capture everything and file your self-assessment.
Should my Camberwell business be a Ltd company?
At profits above £40,000-£50,000 a Ltd company typically saves £2,500-£5,000+ a year through salary-plus-dividend structuring, plus limited liability. Below £30,000 the saving rarely justifies the extra admin. We'll model both with your numbers.
I'm a Camberwell freelancer working from home. What can I claim?
Home office (flat-rate allowance or a proportion of actual housing costs), equipment and software, phone and broadband, professional subscriptions, travel to clients, marketing, training and accountancy. We review your full expense base so nothing legitimate is missed.
