Tax & Accounting for Fareham Businesses

Fareham has one of the south coast's most strategically-located business communities. PO14 to PO16 cover Fareham itself plus Stubbington, Titchfield and parts of Park Gate, anchored by the substantial Whiteley shopping and business cluster, the long-running Fareham town centre with its mix of independent retailers around West Street and the Fareham Shopping Centre, the substantial Solent Business Park supporting tech and professional services tenants, the busy M27 corridor making Fareham a commuter location for Portsmouth and Southampton, the substantial BAE Systems naval shipbuilding supply chain economy across the area, and a wider PO community providing CIS subcontractors and trades businesses serving construction across central Hampshire.

That mix gives Fareham a particular accounting profile. BAE Systems supply chain contractors working through Limited Companies need IR35-aware structures. Light manufacturing on Whiteley and Solent Business Park needs proper VAT treatment plus capital allowances on equipment. CIS subcontractors working across central Hampshire need clean monthly returns and same-day refund processing. Whiteley concession holders need specific landlord turnover reporting. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Fareham clients online with fixed monthly fees.

Client Story

How we sorted a Fareham BAE Systems contractor

Client M is an engineering consultant working through his own Limited Company on long-term engagements with BAE Systems and a tier-one supplier in the Portsmouth naval supply chain. When he came to us his IR35 position had become muddied since the off-payroll rules changed, his previous accountant had continued operating the company as if nothing had changed, and several of his expense claims were no longer appropriate.

We audited each engagement. BAE Systems had moved him inside IR35 (a defensible determination based on the working pattern), but the tier-one supplier engagement was genuinely outside. We restructured the Limited Company to handle the two income streams cleanly, addressed the historic position with HMRC properly before they noticed, set up substantial employer pension contributions through the company on the outside-IR35 income, and built a defensible documentation trail for both engagements.

Year one outcome: a defensible HMRC position that won't blow up if either client is investigated, annual tax saving of around £5,800 from cleaner structuring, and Client M now genuinely understands his IR35 position engagement by engagement.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I contract to BAE Systems or another major naval supply chain client. How does IR35 work?
Medium and large clients (which BAE Systems certainly is) make the IR35 determination through a formal Status Determination Statement. If determined inside IR35, your contract income has to be paid through PAYE with employer NI. If outside, you can still optimise normally. We'll review your specific SDS.
I run a Whiteley or Solent Business Park manufacturing business. What capital allowances am I missing?
The Annual Investment Allowance gives 100 per cent relief on the first £1 million of plant and machinery per year. Full Expensing (permanent from 2024) gives 100 per cent on new plant with no AIA limit. R&D tax credits if you're doing genuine process development.
I'm a Fareham CIS subcontractor. How quickly can you get my refund?
We typically file CIS refund claims within 7-10 days of the 6 April tax year end, with HMRC usually processing payment within 2-4 weeks after that. We provide a receipt-capture app.
My Whiteley concession requires monthly turnover reporting. How do you handle it?
Cleanly. We set up your bookkeeping with the landlord's required categorisation so the monthly report falls out of your accounting software, and we make sure it ties back to your VAT return and year-end accounts.
I'm a Fareham-based contractor commuting to Portsmouth or Southampton. Should I review my IR35?
Yes, especially if you haven't reviewed since the off-payroll rules changed in 2021. For medium and large clients, the client makes the determination. We review the SDS and your working arrangements.
My PO15 Ltd company is doing process R&D. Can I claim the tax credit?
Possibly. R&D tax credits give substantial relief for genuine R&D activity but the rules tightened in 2023 and 2024 with more HMRC scrutiny. You need genuine technical or scientific advancement. We assess your activity honestly and only file if we're confident.
Can you help me move from sole trader to Limited Company in Fareham?
Yes. For most consistent £40k-plus profit trades and contracting businesses, incorporating saves meaningful tax through the salary/dividend split. We handle company formation, asset transfers, new HMRC registrations and the first year's books.
How do I get started?
Book a free 15-minute call via our Calendly link or ring 07478 645331. We work with Fareham clients fully online and we know PO14 to PO16 well. No obligation, no hard sell.
