Tax & Accounting for Leicester City Centre Businesses

Leicester City Centre has one of the UK's most genuinely diverse and commercial small business communities. LE1 covers the central commercial district, the substantial Highcross Shopping Centre, the long-running South Asian business community along Belgrave Road (often called the Golden Mile and famous for the UK's largest Diwali celebrations outside India) and around Highfields, the substantial textile and clothing wholesale cluster that persists from Leicester's manufacturing heritage, the Cultural Quarter creative cluster around the Curve Theatre and LCB Depot, the major University of Leicester and De Montfort University presences, and the substantial King Power Stadium driving match-day trade for Leicester City.

That commercial density gives Leicester a particular accounting profile. South Asian wholesale and retail businesses often have specific considerations around import VAT, multi-currency invoicing and supply chains from overseas. Leicester restaurants and curry houses along Belgrave Road need solid VAT treatment across different food categories. Family-run businesses spanning multiple generations need succession and inheritance tax planning. Highcross concession holders need specific landlord turnover reporting. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Leicester clients fully online with fixed monthly fees.

Client Story

How we restructured a Belgrave Road restaurant

Client P runs a long-established South Indian restaurant on Belgrave Road, family-owned and trading for over 20 years. When he came to us his VAT had been filed by a part-time bookkeeper who didn't really understand the business, his till point-of-sale system wasn't categorising hot food, cold takeaway, sweets and drinks correctly for VAT purposes, his Tronc arrangement for tips was informal resulting in unnecessary NI being paid, and HMRC had recently sent a routine compliance check letter.

We took over the VAT filing immediately and handled the HMRC compliance check on the family's behalf, audited three years of VAT returns and identified around 7 per cent of sales had been incorrectly categorised, formalised the Tronc scheme saving roughly 15 per cent of the tip value on NI, and moved the restaurant onto Cash Accounting for VAT.

Outcome: VAT refund of £6,200 from the historic position, ongoing annual saving of around £4,400 from the Tronc scheme and corrected VAT categorisation, and the HMRC compliance check resolved with no penalty.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

HMRC has sent my Leicester business a compliance check letter. What do I do?
Don't ignore it and don't panic. Most HMRC compliance checks are routine, not investigations. The right approach is to engage cooperatively, supply the information they ask for accurately, and have proper representation. We handle compliance checks for clients regularly and they very rarely escalate when handled properly.
I run a Belgrave Road restaurant. What VAT scheme should I be on?
For most South Asian restaurants we recommend the standard VAT scheme combined with Cash Accounting. Hot food sold for consumption on the premises is standard-rated, hot takeaway is also standard-rated, cold takeaway items can sometimes be zero-rated. Sweets and confectionery have specific VAT treatment. We set up the till categorisation properly.
I import textiles and clothing from India for my Leicester wholesale business. How does import VAT work?
Since Brexit, imports from outside the UK go through Postponed VAT Accounting if you're VAT-registered. You account for import VAT on your normal VAT return rather than paying it upfront. You need an EORI number. This protects cash flow significantly.
My Leicester shop sells halal groceries or food. Anything specific?
Halal certification fees paid to certifying bodies are deductible business expenses, and input VAT can usually be reclaimed if you're VAT-registered. Separate kitchen equipment maintained for halal purposes qualifies for capital allowances normally. The supplier chain documentation serves as part of your general HMRC audit trail.
My Leicester family business pays cash to family members. Is that ok?
Salary needs to reflect actual work done at a commercially reasonable rate. Dividends paid in proportion to shareholdings. HMRC can challenge family-member salaries they consider excessive. We document each family member's role, hours and rate properly.
My Highcross concession requires monthly turnover reporting. How do you handle it?
Cleanly. We set up your bookkeeping with Highcross's required categorisation so the monthly report falls out of your accounting software automatically, and we make sure it ties back to your VAT return and year-end accounts.
Can you handle my Leicester business in Urdu, Hindi, Punjabi or Gujarati?
Talha (the firm's principal) speaks Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi conversationally and understands related languages reasonably well. Initial conversations and ongoing day-to-day work can happen in whichever language is most comfortable. Formal documentation has to be in English but we talk you through everything.
