Tax & Accounting for Bermondsey Businesses

Bermondsey SE1 is a fashionable, fast-changing area just south of the river near London Bridge and Tower Bridge, transformed from its industrial and docklands past into a hub of food and drink (the Bermondsey Beer Mile, Maltby Street Market, Bermondsey Street's restaurants), design and creative studios, and converted-warehouse residential developments. The area has a strongly professional and creative community, many working in the nearby City, alongside the food, drink and design businesses that give it its character, and a high-value landlord market.

That gives Bermondsey a particular accounting profile. Food and drink businesses, breweries, restaurants, market traders, need hospitality and production accounting with specific VAT and duty considerations and tronc. City professionals need bonus and share-income handling. Creatives and design studios need Ltd company structures and sometimes R&D claims. And warehouse-conversion landlords face substantial CGT, Section 24 and service charges. Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, serves Bermondsey clients online with fixed monthly fees.

Client Story

How we claimed £16,500 in capital allowances for a Bermondsey Beer Mile brewery

Client R co-founded a brewery and taproom on the Bermondsey Beer Mile, set up as a Ltd company. They'd invested heavily in brewing kit, fermentation tanks, a canning line and the taproom fit-out, but the bookkeeper had simply expensed routine costs and hadn't identified the substantial capital allowances available on the plant and equipment.

We reviewed the capital expenditure. The brewing tanks, canning line, cold store, bar equipment and qualifying fit-out all qualified for capital allowances, much of it eligible for the Annual Investment Allowance (100%) or full expensing for companies. We claimed the allowances across the open periods, significantly reducing Corporation Tax, set up proper accounting for the taproom and wholesale sales, and handled the beer duty correctly.

Total outcome: £16,500 of capital allowances claimed on brewing equipment and fit-out, materially reducing Corporation Tax, with proper accounting set up for the taproom and wholesale sides and beer duty correctly handled.
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

I run a Bermondsey Beer Mile brewery or taproom. What accountancy do I need?
Production accounting, capital allowances on tanks, canning lines and equipment, the right VAT treatment (taproom and wholesale sales standard-rated), beer duty handling, payroll and tronc for taproom staff, and Corporation Tax. We set it up to give you visibility of margin across taproom, wholesale and distribution, with the substantial capital allowances on your equipment claimed.
Can I claim capital allowances on my Bermondsey brewing or food-production equipment?
Yes. Plant and machinery, brewing tanks, canning lines, kitchen and production equipment, fit-out elements, qualifies. The Annual Investment Allowance gives 100% relief on qualifying spend up to £1m a year, and full expensing gives 100% first-year relief for companies on qualifying new plant. We'll identify and claim everything.
I run a Bermondsey Street restaurant or Maltby Street market stall. VAT and tronc?
Eat-in and hot food are standard-rated; cold takeaway is zero-rated. For tips, a tronc run by an independent tronc master saves NIC (tronc payments are income-tax-able but NIC-exempt). The Tipping Act requires 100% of tips reach staff. We handle the VAT split, payroll and tronc.
I'm a City professional living in Bermondsey. How do I manage my bonus tax?
Income above £100,000 hits the 60% effective rate from the personal allowance taper; above £125,140 the additional rate. Pension contributions reduce adjusted net income and recover the allowance; Gift Aid extends the basic-rate band; timing of RSU vesting helps. We model the options before the bonus is paid.
My Bermondsey design studio does technical work. R&D tax credits?
Possibly. R&D for tax is seeking an advance in science or technology by resolving technical uncertainty, genuine software and technical product innovation can qualify; pure design usually doesn't. We assess your projects and prepare the claim if they qualify.
I'm a Bermondsey landlord with a warehouse-conversion flat. CGT and service charges?
High-value conversions generate substantial gains and significant service charges. Routine service charges are deductible against rental income; major-works contributions are capital. On disposal, CGT at 18%/24% applies. We handle the income treatment and disposal planning and model whether a company structure helps.
I'm a Bermondsey contractor through my Ltd company. IR35 position?
Depends on the client and working practices. Medium/large clients assess your status; small clients mean you self-assess. For genuinely independent contractors with project-based work IR35 is usually outside. We review your contracts and working practices.
