Self-Assessment Accountant in Aberdeen

Self-Assessment Made Simple for Aberdeen Taxpayers

Aberdeen is unlike any other self-assessment market in the UK. As the energy capital of Europe, the Granite City is built around the oil and gas industry, increasingly the energy transition into offshore wind, hydrogen and decommissioning, and it carries an unusually large population of day-rate offshore contractors, drilling and subsea specialists, engineering consultants and project professionals working through their own limited companies or on self-employed terms. These are frequently high earners with complex returns: rotation patterns, overseas assignments and foreign tax, dividends from a personal company, the personal-allowance taper above £100,000, and the high-income child benefit charge. Alongside the energy sector sit the harbour and fishing trades, the universities, and a substantial professional-services and landlord community across the AB postcodes.

Your Tax Help Accountants, HMRC-registered, handles complete self-assessment for Aberdeen's contractors and high earners. SA100 returns with dividends and the salary-dividend split, foreign income and double-tax relief on overseas rotations, the £100k allowance taper and child benefit charge, pension planning to claw allowances back, and full HMRC correspondence, all at a fixed monthly fee. We understand the rhythm of offshore work and the tax traps that come with a strong day rate, and we make sure you keep what you legitimately can.

💡 As an HMRC-registered agent, we deal with HMRC directly on your behalf. Authorisation in place, returns filed, refunds chased, compliance letters handled. You only ever hear from us, never from HMRC.

Real Client Story

How we cut an Aberdeen offshore contractor's tax with the right planning

Client A is a subsea engineer based in Aberdeen, working offshore rotations on a strong day rate through his own limited company, with around £140,000 of income for the year and a partner claiming child benefit. He had been filing his own personal return and taking dividends fairly arbitrarily, with no awareness that he had slipped into the personal-allowance taper above £100,000 and was triggering the full high-income child benefit charge, paying an effective marginal rate of around 60 per cent on a slice of his income.

We modelled the position properly. A well-timed employer pension contribution from his company brought his adjusted net income back below £100,000, which restored his personal allowance, lifted him out of the 60 per cent band on that slice and removed the child benefit charge entirely, while the contribution itself was relieved. We also reviewed an overseas assignment for double-tax relief that his previous returns had handled incorrectly.

The combined saving for the year ran comfortably into five figures, far more than our fee, and his pension was better funded as a result. He now lets us handle the personal return and the company together, and we review the salary, dividend and pension plan before each year-end so the planning happens in time rather than at the deadline.

Self-Assessment Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Self-Assessment Questions

I am an offshore contractor in Aberdeen. Do I need a self-assessment return?
Almost certainly. If you take dividends from your own company, have foreign income from overseas rotations, earn over the high-income thresholds, or HMRC has issued a notice, you must file. Day-rate offshore and energy contracting is exactly the kind of return we handle, including the personal-allowance taper, the child benefit charge and foreign tax.
How is my income taxed if I earn over £100,000?
Above £100,000 your personal allowance tapers away at £1 for every £2 over the threshold, gone entirely by £125,140, which creates an effective 60 per cent band. A well-timed pension contribution that brings your adjusted net income back under £100,000 can restore the allowance and is one of the most tax-efficient moves available. We model the exact saving for your numbers before you act.
I work overseas rotations. How is foreign income and double tax handled?
You declare your worldwide income to HMRC, and where foreign tax has been deducted on an overseas assignment we claim double-tax relief so you are not taxed twice on the same income. Getting the treaty position and residence days right is something we handle as standard for Aberdeen's offshore and energy contractors.
Should I take salary or dividends from my contracting company?
The right balance minimises the combined tax across you and your company, typically a salary that uses your allowances and National Insurance thresholds, with dividends on top, taxed at 8.75, 33.75 or 39.35 per cent depending on your band, with only a £500 dividend allowance. We advise the most efficient split for your year and file the personal return to match.
I am behind on my Aberdeen self-assessment. Can you help?
Yes. We handle late filings, multi-year arrears, missing UTRs and HMRC penalty letters. We file all outstanding returns, appeal penalties where there is a reasonable excuse, and arrange a Time to Pay plan if needed. Most cases are fully back on track within four to six weeks.
How do payments on account work for Aberdeen contractors?
If your tax bill less PAYE is over £1,000 and under 80 per cent was paid through PAYE, HMRC requires payments on account, each 50 per cent of last year's bill, due 31 January and 31 July. With variable day-rate income these can overshoot, so we calibrate and reduce them where your income has fallen to protect your cash flow.
